yes!

as filmdrunk pointed out, this is a real ad which uses/rips off the style originated by that "powerthrist" parody video, but, its awesome so I don't care. Besides those time and eric produced old spiced ads with the muscle-y guy from "The Expendables" pretty much just ripped off power thirst as well, and everyone still seems to think Tim and Eric are funny.

Power Thirst:

One of the Tim and Eric produced old spice ads:

I get on a conceptual level why Tim and Eric are funny, but everything I have seen from them, included the  above ad seems like it puts being weird as a priority over actually being funny or entertaining, so I have to admit that unlike the rest of the internet, I'm not a fan of their style of humor. Though I'm glad we live in a world were adult swim allows comedians with a really niche style of humor to have shows.

(Tim and Eric video and idea that they were similar to "power thirst"was apparently planted in my head months back via WarmingGlow.

Holy Shit The Old Spice Guy Mentions Thor!!!

To be fair, I don't think he meant the "Thor's Hour of Thunder Podcast" but any mention for Thor by winner of "Strictly Commercial's best product spokesman of the 21st Century Award"* is pretty cool.

No, I will never stop doing posts about the Old Spice Guy. OR: "the man your man could smell like" ad update part 2319.

I had seen that Old Spice had some new ads in their Man Your Man Could Smell Like campaign. I hadn't mentioned these ads on the blog yet, because I have already made my love of these commercials known on many many many occasions, and didn't feel like I had much new to say about the newest ads in this continually awesome and well executed series.

I however just discovered that Old Spice did a pretty amazing making of for one of these ads. Old Spice posted it back in March, but I only became aware of its existence today, so I thought I would be remiss if I didn't share its awesomeness with you. (yes, you personally, everyone else who reads this blog can fuck off.*)

Here is the commercial itself:

...and here is how they did it: The first 1:15 is the actual making of, and is really incredible, I wouldn't have guessed half of the transitions they used, its a really good example of how camera placement changes the viewers perception of a scene. The remaining 2 minutes of the video are interviews with the writers and with Isaiah Mustafa, whom I have already established I enjoy watching do anything. Including reciting the script from the first commercial verbatim on Ellen's talk show.

Mustafa's answer to his favorite part about the Old Spice ad at 1:15 is pretty fantastic.

Footnote(s):

*I discovered while finding my old Old Spice posts to link here that I made this same joke back in August while discussing the 2nd series of Old Spice ads.  I assume if Old Spice is still making ads with Isaiah Mustafa six months from now, I will again make a joke about talking specifically to you, dear reader. I guess the way Mustafa directly addresses the audience makes me pine to interact with my readers more intimately. I guess a better word choice there would have been "personally", or a more honest choice of words would have been "sexually".

The Greatest Thing Ever (Old Spice ad update part 139.)

So to preemptively answer your question: No, I will never get over the awesomeness of the Isaiah Mustafa Old Spice ads. All things related to those ads will be covered on this blog without question.

This, as you my have garnered from my subtle title to this post, is the best ad related to those Old Spice ads, and also the best ad I will ever cover on this blog. Its a promo for Seasame Street starring Grover as the Monster Your Man Could Smell like.

Grover was always my favorite muppet as a kid so this ad was pretty much written for me. (Thanks to John Nappi and Charlotte for sending this to me. You are both my heros.)

I love everything about this ad. I love that the sweater falls from the sky over grover's shoulders but just lands on his head. i love that Grover's bathroom has monogrammed towels. I love that the cow at the end of the ad says "Moo" in a human's voice instead of the sound a cow would make.

The only regret I have is that I will never get the opportunity to feature an ad as awesome as this again on this site. Since this ad marks the highpoint for advertising and creative output from humanity in general. 1000 years from now, future generations will have a calender where the eras of time are represented by B.G.O.S.A and A.G.O.S.A, to demarcate for humanity which events occurred before this Grover Old Spice Ad was gifted onto society by the folks at Childern's Television Workshop.

In conclusion:

Two things-ism

I figured I should get the new Old Spice ad out of the way quickly, because while it is awesome and hugely effective, I don't know how much I have to say about it other than just, "This ad is great." So here it goes:

This is ad is great.

The End.

I think I realized how much people who were not just me liked this ad when I was at a bar and it came on without volume, so I tried to narrate it to the friend I was with who hadn't seen it, and discovered the guy at the stool next to us was doing the same with his friend. Speaking of which, if you haven't seen it:

Watching it again has caused me to sit here for a few minutes trying to figure out what it is about the way the actor says the line, "I'm on a horse" that makes it so damn funny, and I'm at a bit of a loss. It's a funny line anyway, but his delivery is matter-of-fact, commanding, and deadpan, all at the same time.

To be hyperbolic for a minute it is clearly the Mona Lisa smile of commercial catch phrases. Mona Lisa smile, in that there are several different subtle emotions that make it successful. Not in that the catch phrase is from an all-girls school with Julia Roberts and Maggie Gyllenhaal. (In retrospect, that probably didn't need to be specified. I don't think anyone even remembers that movie's existence. In further retrospect, why do I remember that movie's existence?)

While we are running away from the topic with Burt Munro-like speed, I remember reading that someone has tried to map the emotions in Mona Lisa's expression, and come up with statistics for how much she is expressing each emotion. According to Professors Nicu Sebe and Tom Huang, Mona is feeling: "83 percent happy, 9 percent disgusted, 6 percent fearful, and 2 percent angry." (source). While I'm not sure how many emotions are present and visible on the average person's face, I find it funny that Mona Lisa's second most visible emotion is disgust. Maybe she precognitively became aware that centuries later people would stop associating her with great art and would instead associate her with the plot of a pulp novel by a failed pop musician. (Rim shot).

For more on Dan Brown's unintentionally hilarious music career, check out these actual samples of some of his songs on Buzzfeed.

In Conclusion: I was right I really didn't have a whole lot to say about the Old Spice ad, but that didn't stop me from making this post really long. Though really I'm just glad I got an opportunity to link the instant rim shot website. Hopefully some post soon I will have a chance to link the instant sad trombone sound effect website and all my life's work will be complete.
